I like banned books and I cannot lie

It's Banned Books Week and Lila has some celebrations going on! Drop by the library to check out our display of banned books and join us for our Banned Books Week convocation program.

Here is what you need to know:

What? Internet Censorship in TN: Information Wants to be Free! (personal/professional growth category)
When? Wednesday, Sept. 28 from 7-8 pm
Where? Leu 117

Karyn Storts-Brink, high school librarian from Knoxville will speak through Skype about joining her students in suing the Knox County School District for using Internet filters to block “gay positive” websites while allowing access to “gay negative” sites. Storts-Brinks fought for intellectual freedom, arguing that students were only allowed to access one side of information about LGBT issues. In 2009, the school district agreed to unblock the sites with LGBT information and as a result, all schools in Tennessee changed the settings on their Internet filtering software. This convocation program is being co-sponsored by Bunch Library and Bridge Builders as part of Banned Books Week’s celebration of intellectual freedom.

You want it? You got it!

The Listening/Viewing Center (LVC) on the 3rd floor of Bunch Library has updated their policies regarding checkout of media. Until now, undergrads have had in-house privileges only for all items in the LVC. Now, ALL students can take CDs and DVDs home! See the complete Media Circulation Policies for details. For help finding a movie or recording in the LVC just ask!

This collection, though its focus is on courses offered throughout campus, also has timeless standards, cult classics and ageless recordings spanning most genres and time periods in past and recent history. For popular or new releases, the Pop Media section is still housed on the first floor.

New and newsworthy resources!

Were you devastated when we lost full-text access to the Tennessean? If so, rejoice! Thanks to the Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL), we have access to the full text of the Tennessean back to 2002!

The Law Library has hooked us up with another awesome, new resource: ProQuest Congressional. All Belmont students, faculty and staff have access to ProQuest Congressional, which you might have previously encountered as LexisNexis Congressional.

A very big thanks to two of Lila's favorite friends, old (TEL) and new (Law Library).

Immortal & Beloved

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, by Rebecca Skloot, is the 2011 First Year Seminar Common Book. You have all summer to track down a copy. Remember that the Common Book is not just for FYS students. Read it and then let Lila know what you thought in the library's guide!

Thursday, June 2, 2011

Look it up, dear.

Remember when looking it up meant consulting a print reference book like a dictionary or encyclopedia? Now you can have the best of both worlds, the credibility of a published source and the convenience of online access!

The Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL) now offers access to the World Book Encyclopedia! Like all TEL resources, the World Book Encyclopedia is available free of charge to all residents of the state of Tennessee.

2. Eat (fresh) veggies! Beaman will become a drop-off point for Real Food Farm’s CSA program, giving students and faculty an opportunity to purchase a weekly supply of fresh organic vegetables at an affordable price.

3. Hit the gym and bring a friend! Summer Buddy Memberships are available for a bargain! Even freshly-graduated seniors won't be cut off!

4. Breathe some fresh air! Pack a picnic and head to Centennial, Sevier, Es Rose or any of Nashville's other parks or greenways.

5. Listen to the music! Bike to Bonnaroo, become a regular at your favorite venue, or enjoy free outdoor concerts like 12th South Concert Series in Sevier Park, Musician's Corner at Centennial, the Nashville Symphony's Regions Community Concerts, etc. Nashville for Free will give you a heads up on the freebies, right Emily?

pepsi on the run?

To those of you asking, "Hey, who ran away with the Pepsi vending machine?!?!" Lila has good news. It has been moved to the 2nd floor atrium and the snack vending machine will follow shortly. Why, you ask? Café construction will begin as early as next Monday, May 9th! Yipppeee!

Fruity? Fudgy?

Lila has both kinds. Stop by this afternoon (1-3pm) for a free popsicle!

Dead day? Not in Lila's house

You already knew about our all-night study areas, right? If you haven't already spent the night in the library, now is your chance!
Get some culture! Looking at purdy pictures is a great study break. The Senior Art Exhibition is still up in LCVA 121 and in our gallery foyer. "Where we've been" is on display in Lila's main gallery.
Print final papers/projects/boarding passes. When the computers in the reference area are full, head to the MILC (the 1st floor computer lab near the entrance of the library).

Should you feel compelled to venture outside of the library on dead day...
Noon-5pm: Moovers and Shakers, Nashville's first mobile soda parlor and the brainchild of two Belmont Entrepreneurs, will be on the south lawn. Root beer float, anyone?
9-11pm: UM's Pancake Night in the Cafeteria / Student Center. Hot, fresh, and smothered in butter. Bring it.

Week, not weak, of the library

Every week is a library week for Lila, but the rest of the country will join in on the celebration April 10 - 16. National Library Week immediately (and appropriately) follows the excitement of Belmont’s 1st Annual Literacy Week! This year's theme, "Create Your Own Story @ Your Library," will allow us to celebrate how y’all use the library.

We are hosting an Author Talk with former Nashville Scene writer and Nashvillian Adam Ross at 7pm on Wednesday, April 13. His bestselling debut novel, Mr. Peanut, was described by Stephen King as "The most riveting look at the dark side of marriage since Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" Curious? Come by and listen to the writer discuss his work and stick around for cookies, coffee, and an autographed copy (if you buy it)!

Got literacy?

Good, then help pass on this precious gift! The 11th Annual Family Literacy Day, coming up on Saturday, April 9 from 1-4pm, is a great opportunity to experience the power (and fun!) of literacy. You can register online for this CS Convo eligible event.

Belmont’s First Annual Literacy Week kicks off next Monday, April 4, with two PPG Convos featuring children’s author Faye Gibbons. "Inspiring Students to be Readers and Writers through Children’s Literature" is at 10am in Inman 210 and "The Importance of Reading to Children" is at 2pm in the Vince Gill Room. Wednesday night at 7:30pm head to Massey 210 for spoken word performance by “B the Word” Student Poets. On Thursday, April 7, poet and former head of the NEA Dana Gioia will present a PPG Convo at 2pm in the library’s Multimedia Hall and an AL convo on “Reading and Civic Engagement” at 8pm in the Belmont Heights Baptist Church Sanctuary. Two C&A Convos are slated for Friday, 4/8, Dana Gioia’s Poetry Reading at 10am in the Library’s Multimedia Hall and our very own National Champion Speech and Debate Team's Literary Showcase from 5-7pm in Massey 103. Memory Lane, digitized!

Belmont University Special Collections has partnered with Harpeth Hall to create a digital archives collection, housed within Internet Archive.

The Belmont/Harpeth Hall collection includes such items as yearbooks (annuals), catalogs, pictures, curriculum guides, and faculty/student rosters from Belmont College for Young Women, Ward’s Seminary for Young Ladies, Ward-Belmont School and Harpeth Hall. Belmont University contributed catalogs, annuals and school magazines from Ward-Belmont, covering the years 1913-1951.

Pretty as a picture

Belmont: Then and Now, the Senior Capstone Project of the outgoing BFA students, is now on permanent display throughout the first floor stacks of the library. Each frame consists of both a contemporary and an historic (1863- 1951) image of Belmont University's campus. The contrast depicts the changes, both subtle and stark, that have figured in the landscape of our university.
