I like banned books and I cannot lie

It's Banned Books Week and Lila has some celebrations going on! Drop by the library to check out our display of banned books and join us for our Banned Books Week convocation program.

Here is what you need to know:

What? Internet Censorship in TN: Information Wants to be Free! (personal/professional growth category)
When? Wednesday, Sept. 28 from 7-8 pm
Where? Leu 117

Karyn Storts-Brink, high school librarian from Knoxville will speak through Skype about joining her students in suing the Knox County School District for using Internet filters to block “gay positive” websites while allowing access to “gay negative” sites. Storts-Brinks fought for intellectual freedom, arguing that students were only allowed to access one side of information about LGBT issues. In 2009, the school district agreed to unblock the sites with LGBT information and as a result, all schools in Tennessee changed the settings on their Internet filtering software. This convocation program is being co-sponsored by Bunch Library and Bridge Builders as part of Banned Books Week’s celebration of intellectual freedom.

You want it? You got it!

The Listening/Viewing Center (LVC) on the 3rd floor of Bunch Library has updated their policies regarding checkout of media. Until now, undergrads have had in-house privileges only for all items in the LVC. Now, ALL students can take CDs and DVDs home! See the complete Media Circulation Policies for details. For help finding a movie or recording in the LVC just ask!

This collection, though its focus is on courses offered throughout campus, also has timeless standards, cult classics and ageless recordings spanning most genres and time periods in past and recent history. For popular or new releases, the Pop Media section is still housed on the first floor.

Back to school, back to school…

Welcome (back)!

Lila has some great news to cure the end-of-summer blues.

Bruin Grounds Café is open in the library! Café hours are 7am -10pm so stop by for delicious beverages and cuisine named with a literary theme. The grand opening celebration with live music and samples will be Wednesday, August 31st from 10am-12pm.

24/5 hours continue this semester in Bunch Library. That’s right! Hang out non-stop from 1pm on Sunday until 7pm on Friday. Saturday hours are from 9am – 7pm.

Loanable technology, specifically Flip cameras and audio recorders, are available for checkout from the Listening/Viewing Center on the 3rd floor.

Transitioning to be a learning commons where many services are housed in one place, Bunch Library is now the home of the Sophomore Transition Center, Teaching and Learning Center, and the General Education office.

New and newsworthy resources!

Were you devastated when we lost full-text access to the Tennessean? If so, rejoice! Thanks to the Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL), we have access to the full text of the Tennessean back to 2002!

The Law Library has hooked us up with another awesome, new resource: ProQuest Congressional. All Belmont students, faculty and staff have access to ProQuest Congressional, which you might have previously encountered as LexisNexis Congressional.

A very big thanks to two of Lila's favorite friends, old (TEL) and new (Law Library).
