Bunch Library is hosting an election-themed convocation this week!
When: Wednesday, October 24 from 10-10:50 am
Where:
Leu Art Gallery in Bunch Library
Who: Our three speakers are Michelle
Murray-Yang (Communication Studies), Kevin Trowbridge (Public Relations) and
Courtney Fuson (Library)
Truthiness: Deciphering fact
vs. fiction during election season
We all have that
friend or relative who posts and sends emails reporting the latest political
scandals: “Barack and Michelle Obama both surrendered their law licenses for
questionable reasons” or “Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney transported
a dog atop his car.” Where does this information come from and how does it
spread? While some of these theories may not warrant an investigation, many of
them do. How do you know if politicians, reporters, and journalist are speaking
the truth? This convocation program will provide some background on the role of
media during elections, discuss elections where new information has drastically
affected results, and give some tips and tools for navigating fact and fiction
during this election season.
This convocation
program is for Academic Lecture credit.
