Printing Help Revisited and Revamped

Getting Started with PaperCut
Here at Bunch Library, we listen to our fans.  We give the people what they want.

In response to this wonderful creation, the Library Systems Team took it upon themselves to add to the library of PaperCut support documentation.  So, we put together these screencasts.  This way, users have a visual walkthrough for printing documents, adding funds to their account, wireless printing, and dealing with some common errors.
If you want additional screen casts/how-to videos on PaperCut or any other library technology, contact libsystems@belmont.edu.  For additional PaperCut support documentation click here.

OneSearch to Rule Them All

Today, Bunch Library introduces OneSearch, a deep-index based discovery process for getting to library services.  It combines the library’s databases, catalog and other resources to provide a single search box for all library resources.  That's right: you can search the entire breadth and depth of Bunch Library's content, both physical and electronic, from a single search box.

Officially, this is a beta release, and the full product will debut in January.  Please send any and all feedback concerning OneSearch to research@belmont.edu.  We would greatly appreciate the chance to improve the product before January.

To use OneSearch, go to http://belmont.summon.serialssolutions.com, and start searching!  If you'd like to see a short demonstration of how OneSearch works, watch the video after the jump.

Gramming it Up: Lila is Now on Instagram

Bunch Library is now on Instagram, the social media application that allows users to share their photos, comment on or like others' photos, and essentially form a web-based community around images.  If you're a Belmont student reading this post, chances are you probably already know what Instagram is, so let's skip to the important bit.

The Bunch Instagram page can be found here.  It is of course curated by our ever-reliable mascot and social media correspondent, Lila.

We will repost your library-related photos.  Just add #liladbunch to the caption of your post, and Lila will select her favorites to repost each week.  Garnering our students internet fame is just one more service that we at Bunch Library provide :).

We Moved...

...to a new print system!

A PaperCut PSA from Bunch Library

The new, campus-wide system is called Papercut, and it allows you to load money to an online account that will then decline each time you print.  You can load money via credit card, PayPal, or with cash by purchasing a top-up card from the circulation desk.  Super-easy!

Here are some helpful training videos on how to use PaperCut (put together by Chuck Hodgin, our Systems Librarian):

Adding money to your account

If you prefer in-person assistance, keep an eye out for Chuck Hodgin and Sue Maszaros, two of our wonderful librarians, who will be in the dorms Monday-Wednesday, August 26-28 from 9:00-11:00 am and 1:00-3:00 pm to answer all of your burning PaperCut questions!  Stop by and see what this is all about!

New Cataloger in the House!

Zach Fischer, our new Cataloging and Metadata Librarian!

Bunch Library made a lot of changes this summer, including welcoming Zach Fischer, our new Cataloging and Metadata Librarian.  Lina Terjesen, Music Librarian, took a few minutes to sit down and find out more about him.

Where are you from?

I’m from Colorado.  I went to the University of Kansas for my BA in Classical Antiquity then the University of Colorado Boulder for my MA in Classics.  I just relocated to Nashville from Austin, TX where I went to the “other UT” for my MSIS (Master of Science in Information Studies).  While in school at UT Austin, I worked in the library as one of the many catalogers and librarians cataloging ETDs (electronic theses and dissertations) and curating other projects in the digital repository, and books, of course.

What is cataloging, and why is it important?

Cataloging is describing, organizing, and maintaining information.  It’s important because if a resource is not cataloged properly, students won’t be able to find it.  If it is cataloged properly, they can find it quickly.

Do you have any projects coming up that you’re excited about?

I’m excited about forming a digital repository, which will be a dedicated electronic storage for the long-term preservation of materials.  I’m also excited about converting our cataloging polices to RDA (Resource Description and Access), a new set of guidelines for describing information and integrating information resources.

What excites you about Belmont?

I’m excited by the prospect of forming a digital repository, working with a small, user-oriented staff, and living in another music city.

What is your favorite thing about Nashville?

It’s green!  At UT Austin there are not too many trees; in Colorado, there are trees, but they are different and sparse and on fire every summer.  Here, they’re green and perky!

Do you have a least favorite thing about Nashville?

Flooding!  I’m not used to water having grown up in Kansas and Colorado.  Here, there’s water everywhere!

Do you have any interests or hobbies?

I LOVE British TV – Sherlock, Wallander, Torchwood, Pramface – and I LOVE Classics (Latin, Greek, archaeology).  I have been on two archaeological excavations: a Medieval church near Ravenna, Italy and a Bronze Age site in Mitrou, Greece (on a trip through UT Knoxville).

Any fun facts about you?

I like cataloging! That’s the oddest thing about me.

That’s a little librarian humor, but we’re super-excited and glad Zach is here.  He hit the ground running and has already made sure the resources we have in Bunch Library are cataloged and classified correctly and easily found in our system and on the shelves.  If you see Zach outside of his office be sure to say hi and welcome him to Belmont!

Dr. Shadinger READS

Bunch Library is starting a new poster series featuring familiar faces with their favorite books. Dr. Shadinger from the School of Music was kind enough to agree to be in our very first poster! He chose the book Beethoven's Hair: An Extraordinary Historical Odyssey and a Scientific Mystery Solved by Russel Martin. This poster is featured in the Music Library on the third floor of Bunch and in our online gallery found here. Read what Dr. Shadinger said about this book below.

This is a true and interesting account of a lock of Beethoven’s hair (cut as souvenir by a friend at the time of Beethoven’s death). The book chronicles the saga of the lock of hair as it passes from owner to owner until it is lost during WW II because it belonged to a Jewish family who died in the holocaust. In recent years the hair (contained in a locket) resurfaced in Denmark. The author weaves an interesting detective story to figure out how the hair survived the war. After the hair is auctioned and comes into new hands in recent years, it was forensically tested and revealed interesting clues about Beethoven’s health and what might have caused his hearing loss and ultimate death. It is a captivating story.

Blind date with a book

Now that Valentine’s Day is over, have your next date with a book from the Bunch Library collection, and you might win a gift certificate to the Bruin Grounds coffee shop here in the library.
  •          Each book has a clue on its envelope as to the subject.
  •       You may check out one book at a time.
  •      DO NOT OPEN the envelope!  (It’s a blind date.)
  •      Take the item to the circulation desk and check it out, but again, DO NOT OPEN until you have left the library building.
  •      Read (and hopefully enjoy) your blind date.
  •      Fill out the very short survey inside and bring it back when you return your book. You’ll be entered in the drawing for one of five Bruin Grounds gift certificates. The drawing will be held after students are back from Spring Break.
Books are on a shelf in the Research Services Area. Ask a librarian if you need assistance!
